Alpaca poncho: softer than cashmere, warmer than wool

An alpaca poncho is one of the most striking ways to wear alpaca wool. We use alpaca wool, one of the most prized natural fibers in the world. The result is a poncho that drapes with real weight and structure.

Hypoallergenic & lanolin-free

Alpaca contains no lanolin, the natural grease found in sheep’s wool. That makes our ponchos hypoallergenic and comfortable worn directly over a sweater or against a t-shirt, with no itch.

Alpaca’s hollow fiber structure traps warmth while staying breathable. A poncho gives you full coverage across the shoulders and chest, so it warms more surface area than a scarf or shawl, without ever feeling heavy.

Handwoven ponchos: a limited collection, woven by hand

Alongside our regular collection, we offer a small selection of ponchos that are genuinely handwoven, made one at a time using traditional weaving techniques rather than machine production. Each handwoven piece takes considerably longer to make, which is why this collection is limited to just a few designs. Every other poncho in our collection is made in Peru with our local producers, using the same alpaca fiber but a faster production process.

Alpaca ponchos for men and women

Our ponchos are designed to work for both men and women, with a silhouette and natural color palette that reads as versatile rather than gendered. Thrown over a t-shirt or layered on top of a sweater, an alpaca poncho adds structure and warmth to almost any outfit, from a casual weekend look to a statement piece.

Made in Peru, in small batches

Most of our ponchos are made in Peru by our local producers. We work directly with them, without middlemen, which means fair pay and a more sustainable impact in the Andes. Because we produce in small batches, and because our handwoven pieces take even longer to make, quantities are limited and colors don’t stay in stock indefinitely.

How to wear an alpaca poncho

A poncho is one of the easiest pieces to style: slip it over a plain t-shirt for a relaxed daytime look, layer it over a turtleneck for extra warmth, or wear it as a statement piece over a simple dress. It works equally well as an everyday layer or as the centerpiece of an outfit, which is part of why it’s such a versatile addition to a wardrobe.

A poncho that makes a distinctive gift

Because it’s less common than a scarf or a sweater, an alpaca poncho makes a memorable gift for someone who already has the basics covered. A handwoven piece, in particular, carries the story of how it was made, which makes it feel even more personal.

Frequently asked questions about alpaca ponchos

Does an alpaca poncho itch? +

No. Our alpaca ponchos are made from high-quality alpaca fibers that are lanolin-free, making them hypoallergenic and gentle on sensitive skin. We offer both alpaca and baby alpaca ponchos, with baby alpaca being the softer and more luxurious option. Both are exceptionally soft, breathable, and comfortable to wear.

Is alpaca warmer than wool? +

Yes. Baby alpaca insulates better than sheep’s wool while staying lighter, and it’s as soft as fine cashmere, but more durable.

What’s the difference between your handwoven ponchos and the rest of the collection? +

Our handwoven ponchos are made one at a time using traditional weaving techniques, which gives them a subtle, irregular texture and takes considerably longer to produce. The rest of our ponchos are made in Peru with our local producers, using the same alpaca fiber with a faster production process.

Are your ponchos suitable for men? +

Yes. Our ponchos are designed to work for both men and women, with natural colors and a silhouette that isn’t gender-specific.

What is baby alpaca wool? +

Despite its name, baby alpaca doesn’t come from baby animals. It refers to the finest, softest fibers produced by adult alpacas, the highest quality grade of alpaca wool.

Why are your ponchos in limited quantities? +

Most are produced in small batches in Peru, and our handwoven pieces take even longer to make one at a time. That means better quality, but also that some colors and designs sell out and aren’t always restocked.

Do you ship alpaca ponchos to the US, UK, Canada and Australia? +

Yes, we ship worldwide from our warehouse in Barcelona. Delivery to the US, UK, Canada and Australia takes 4-8 business days. Shipping is currently free.

How do I care for an alpaca poncho? +

Air it out after wearing, that’s usually enough. For a deeper clean, we recommend professional dry cleaning. See our alpaca care guide for more details.

Where are Tukuy’s ponchos made? +

Most of our ponchos are made in Peru by our local producers, working directly with them, without middlemen, under fair conditions. Our handwoven ponchos are woven by hand as part of a separate, limited collection also made in Peru.
